How to Compare VPS Deals: A Checkout-First Checklist
Compare what a VPS deal charges now, what renews later, and what the plan actually includes before choosing by a monthly headline price.
Short answer: compare the amount due at checkout, the months that payment covers, the renewal amount and cadence, and the resources and support included. A monthly figure can be an average of a prepaid term: Hostinger says its displayed monthly rate divides the total plan price by the plan length and that plans are paid upfront. InMotion's plan page shows a selected term alongside a separate renewal price. Read the billing terms on each provider's official page before treating two “per month” figures as comparable.
This guide adds a practical worksheet to the prices we list on savecd. Our offer pages show a source-listed price only when it can be read from official structured data; they do not claim that a headline price is the full amount due or the renewal amount.
Use this three-pass deal check
1. Follow the payment clock
Write down what is charged today, whether the displayed monthly rate is paid monthly or is an average over a longer prepaid term, the number of months in the first term, and when the price changes. Copy the renewal amount and billing cadence from the official page or checkout. If either is missing, mark it “not confirmed” and do not fill it with the introductory rate.
For example, Hostinger's official VPS deal page explains that its monthly rate is the plan total divided by the term length and says plans are paid upfront. Its official page should be checked again at purchase time because offers and terms can change.
2. Match the server to the same job
Compare the resources you need, not the size of the discount badge. Record vCPU, memory, storage type and capacity, transfer or bandwidth terms, and location. Keep unlike plans in separate rows: more memory does not automatically offset less storage, a different transfer policy, or a location that does not fit your workload. Leave a field blank when the provider does not state it clearly.
3. Price the work you will have to do
Mark whether the plan is managed or self-managed, what support covers, and whether backups, a control panel, migration, or other required features are included or optional. InMotion describes self-managed VPS as customer-managed at the operating-system and software level, while its managed option includes server administration services. That distinction can matter as much as the advertised price if you need the provider to handle routine server work.
Copyable VPS deal worksheet
| Field | What to record | Evidence to save |
|---|---|---|
| Plan identity | Provider, plan name, and region | Official plan page or checkout |
| Amount due now | Full first invoice, including required add-ons and taxes shown at checkout | Checkout summary |
| First term | Months covered and whether payment is prepaid | Billing terms |
| Renewal | Renewal amount, cadence, and when it begins | Official renewal terms |
| Resources | vCPU, memory, storage, transfer, and location | Plan specification |
| Operations | Management, backup, support, control panel, and cancellation terms | Service description and terms |
Compare costs over the same time window
Use the provider's actual billing periods. For a chosen comparison window:
Window cost = first-term charges that fall in the window + renewal charges in the window + required add-ons and taxes shown by the provider.
Average monthly cost for that window = window cost ÷ months in the window.
Do not substitute the advertised monthly average for “amount due today.” If the renewal schedule or required charges are not published, mark the comparison incomplete rather than estimating them. This arithmetic is a comparison method, not a quote; the checkout page controls the amount charged.
Questions to answer before buying
Is the lowest monthly number automatically the best VPS deal?
No single monthly number answers that. First align the billing term and renewal schedule, then compare the resources and the provider work included. A plan that does not meet the workload or requires services you have not counted is not directly comparable.
What if the provider does not show a renewal price?
Record “not confirmed,” check the provider's official terms or ask the provider before purchasing, and keep that plan out of any renewal-cost ranking until you have a source.
Should I count a refund guarantee as a discount?
Keep refund terms in a separate column. A cancellation or refund policy does not change the amount shown for the first term, and its conditions should be read on the provider's current official policy page.
